Murray County History 1982
Gust Anderson was born in Vastergotland, Sweden in the year 1862. Gust immigrated to America 1884. Hannah Lenberg who was also born in Vastergotland, Sweden, immigrated to America in 1882. Gus and Hannah both arrived in Iron Mountain, Michigan where they each had relatives.
Most men in that community of Iron Mountain, Michigan, as the name implies, worked in the Iron mines. Disenchanted with the work at the mines, in 1885 Gust along with many other Swedish men and women came by train to Murray County, Minnesota. Here he bought 100 acres of land at the price of $2.00 an acre. This land is the first farm north of the Currie Corner on the east side of the road. In 1886 Hannah went back to Wakefield, Michigan while Gust stayed in Minnesota to take in the years crop. Gust then returned to Michigan and the two were married on September 18, 1886 in Ashland, Wisconsin. They lived at Hurley, Wisconsin for fifteen years during these years the couple was blessed with five children: Hulda (Mrs. Fred Widboom), Tera (Mrs. Arvid Anderson), Walter, Oscar, and Elder.
They came back to their land in June 1901 and began building a home and barn on the open field. Later planting trees and a shelter belt around the buildings. One more daughter was born in Minnesota Lilly (Mrs. Elis Peterson).
Gust and Hannah continued to live on the farm until 1939, when they moved into Slayton. Gust passed away January 2, 1944 and Hannah passed away on February 10, 1962 at the age of 97.
