Marrie Antoinette Hoel, 95, Rockford, Illinois, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Wesley Willows Health Center. Marrie was born August 1, 1921, in Rockford, the daughter of Edwin and Verona Gustafson.
She was a member of the last graduating class of Rockford Central High School. Marrie was wed to Layton L. Hoel on May 10, 1941, and they lived happily together for 53 years before his death in 1994.
Marrie worked as a switchboard operator for Illinois Bell Telephone and later as a cafeteria worker at East High school, but her family and home were her priority. She loved gardening, baking the best tollhouse cookies and pies and spending time with her family, friends, and the neighborhood kids.
Marrie served as Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader and participated in many activities at Hallstrom School. She was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church and charter member of Hope Circle, taught Sunday school and summer Bible school.
Survivors include: sons, Layton (Kathryn) and David (Marianne); daughters, Christie (Gilbert) Valdes and Marcia (William) Brass; grandchildren; brother, Daniel Gustafson; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Marrie was predeceased by: her parents; husband, Layton; sisters, Gertrude Archer and Barbra Moore; brother, Edward; grandson, Richard Anderson; and granddaughter, Rachel Brass.
Funeral Service on Monday, May 1, 2017, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, Rockford. Interment in Willwood Burial Park.
