Sonja Bernice (Kinney) Barnes was born March 10, 1959, to William Lewis and Eleanor Mae (Goldman) Kinney in Columbia, Missouri.

Sonja was educated in the Columbia Public School system graduating from Hickman High School. Education was very important for Sonja. She moved to Des Moines and attended Mercy Hospital’s School of Nursing. She received her BSN and worked for Mercy for over 19 years until she was called to change her career path to social work. Sonja returned to Missouri and attained her BA in Social work from Columbia University and also a MSW from the University of Missouri. All the while she worked for the Department of Human Services in Missouri and Iowa and raised a family. Dedicated to helping people, she found the time to care. Sonja also found time to play spades and work on scrapbooking projects. She loved exploring genealogy and worked on the family reunion committee for years. She was a great cook and you had to taste her meatloaf and potato soup. They were the best. And, of course, Sonja made time for worship. She was a member of the Step of Faith Ministries under Pastor R.L. Thornton.

After a courageous battle, Sonja passed away due to complications from kidney and heart transplant surgery. She made her transition on April 12, 2017, at the age of 58. Preceding her in death were her father, William Kinney, step-father, Leroy Wright, brother, Marvin Kinney, grandparents, James and Roma Goldman, and brother-in-law, Ricky Walker.

She will be missed by her children, Darrell (Melissa) Barnes, Jr., Sandra Barnes-Warren, Kandas Holmes-Barnes, DeAnna (Robert) Hobbs, Jasmine (Vince) Bulford, Andre Barnes, Trevin Lane-Barnes, Jacquline (KaRon) Hayes, Darius Barnes; her mother, Eleanor Wright; step-mother, Glenda Kinney; siblings, William (Classie) Kinney, Donna (Buddy) Walker, Alissa Walker, Roma (Sam) Harris, and Regina Wright, Robin Coleman, Evelyn Coleman; 22 grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.

Acknowledgement

The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to the families of the organ donors for Sonja’s transplants, to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, the dedicated staff and to the Russell Chapel, and the many people who took the time to call, encourage, pray for, and support them and Sonja during this journey. God bless you all.
