Howard LeRoy (H.L.) Carmichael, 89, of Mercer, MO passed away April 22, 2017 at his home in Mercer, MO with his three (3) daughters, Ardeania Cale, Rita Worden, Renee Carmichael-Puryear, and grandson Robert Puryear, III, by his side. H.L. was born November 23, 1927 in Lineville, IA the son of Orville LeRoy Carmichael and Kathleen Ardenia Booher. H.L. was the older brother of Max Duane Carmichael. H.L. and Max were raised by their grandparents, Adam Tennessee Booher and Laura J. Nigh Booher, whom they both loved dearly.

On December 2, 1950 he married Dorothy Mae Haggard. She preceded him in death on July 19, 2009.

H.L. attended Lineville High School, after his military service he worked as a mechanic and drove semi trucks for many years until moving to Davenport IA where he was a supervisor for Colt Industries (Fairbanks Morse) for 23 years. He was a member of the Mercer Baptist Church and the Ragan Hickman American Legion Post #477. He served two tours of duty. A 4 year tour serving in the US Navy and 3 year tour in the US Army, serving in WWII and Korea. He loved collecting clocks (he had l00’s), traveling, coin collecting, and in younger years was a race car driver; loved gardening; and was a member of the Ernest Tubb fan club.

Besides his spouse, he was also preceded in death by his parents; niece, Laura Treadwell; and nephew Dennis Carmichael.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Ardeania (Ron) Cale, Davenport, IA, Rita (Terry) Worden, Walcott, IA, and Renee Puryear, Jacksonville, FL; 6 grandchildren, Ryan Cale, Terrah (Vinny) Setteducato, Savanna Worden, Justin (Ashley) Young, Samantha Young, and Robert Puryear III; brother, Max (Devra) Carmichael; and nephew, Joe Carmichael.
