The son of Samuel E. Schofield and Rachel Hedges he married Rebecca Etta Hagae in Greenup, IL in 1861. They had six children to my knowledge including James A. Schofield/Scofield who died at the age of 1 day. He is buried in Brick Cemetery outside the town of Newton in Jasper County, IL. His memorial on Find-A-Grave is memorial # 40556997.

John and his brother William served in the Civil War. It is said that their last name was originally spelled S-c-o-f-i-e-l-d and that the spelling was changed during their time in the war. According to family stories, the brothers often recieved the mail belonging to another set of brothers named William and John Scofield and so added the 'h' into their name to avoid the mail mix-up.
