James Monroe Barton was a farmer and Methodist minister. He never joined the North Georgia Conference, but achieved his license to preach, perform weddings, bury the dead and administer the Holy Sacrament. Being a farmer, he didn't have much money, but he managed to save a few thousand dollars. Not wanting to give more to one child than the other, he gave each of his children $200 (he had 14 children). At the time, Eugene and Lou Reeta were too young to receive their share. Father said, "If you two children will accept your two hundred dollars toward an education, we will move to Waleska, Georgia, so you can attend Reinhardt Junior College." They agreed, so the family moved, even taking the cow, and James Monroe was still able to have a vegetable garden after they got settled. Eugene worked in the college library and cafeteria to make extra money to help with his expenses. James Monroe got homesick for Pine Log, so the family left Eugene at Waleska to continue school and moved back to Pine Log.
A neighbor of the Barton family, a man, his wife and two sons fell ill. James Monroe, being the Christian man he was, felt he should do something to help the family, so he went to their home during the cold winter weather, cut wood to keep the family warm, and then sat up at night with them. It was so cold inside their house that he had to wear his overcoat to try and stay warm. Unfortunately, the man could not recover from his illness and died. James Monroe stood outside on the icy, cold ground and preached the man's funeral. In less than two weeks, James Monroe took sick with pneumonia and died.
