Vinson's brother, Cannon, was some 17 years younger and of just the right age to fight in the Civil War. Cannon Barton caught typhoid fever and unfortunately, Army medical care was lacking and thousands of soldiers died from typhoid.
After Cannon's death August 1, 1862, his body was sent home. Ludwig Columbus Armstrong and James Thompson Casey, Vinson's sons-in-law who were also serving in the Bartow Rangers, were detailed to accompany Cannon's body back to Pine Log. Vinson Barton went into Cartersville, Georgia, met the escorts and brought them to Pine Log, then caught typhoid fever himself as a result of the exposure. Only two weeks later Vinson died.
