During his years as president, the Milwaukee Road converted its locomotive fleet to diesels and signed a major agreement with the Union Pacific Railroad to share operation of five passenger trains between Chicago and the West Coast.
"He loved travel," said his daughter Rosemary Hartrich, and began traveling with the railroad during a school vacation in 1913, when he worked as a rodman on the Milwaukee Road track project in the Chicago area. In 1915, he graduated from Villanova University with a degree in civil engineering and joined the railroad full time. He was appointed auditor in 1940, assistant to the president in 1946, and president in 1950, retiring in 1957.

Mass for Mr. Kiley, a longtime South Shore and Oak Lawn resident, was said at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Germaine Catholic Church, 98th Street and Kolin Avenue, Oak Lawn.
Interment Holy Sepulchre. Visitation Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Providence Retirement Fund, St. Mary of the Woods, IN 47876. 779-1100.
