Army Pfc. Moreno was assigned to Battery A, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. The soldiers in his unit man 155-mm. howitzers in support of troops trying to root out Saddam Hussein loyalists in Iraq. Moreno died Jan. 29 at the Lakenheath Medical Treatment Facility, United Kingdom, after he was shot in the face and shoulder on Jan. 23 while he was guarding a gas station in Baghdad. After he was wounded, he was flown to the Lakenheath Medical Treatment Facility. He was supposed to be transferred to a hospital in Washington, but the trip was delayed because of snow. Luis came to the United States in 1991 with his family. He joined the military after graduating from high school because he wanted to show his appreciation of his adopted country and was hoping that military service would make it easier for him to become a citizen and realize his dream of becoming a police officer. He had been stationed in Baghdad for three month and spoke to his family about two weeks before he was shot. His family told him to keep his eyes open and be careful and Luis said, "I will, Dad. Hopefully, they'll be pulling us out in March or April and I'll be home". Several politicians from New York and his family have written to President Bush, requesting that he be posthumously granted citizenship. His family was presented with his Purple Heart and Bronze Star. The day before Luis left for Iraq, he attended a party. He told people he was going to celebrate a lot because he didn't know if he was coming back.
