Wayne served in the Army Air Force in World War II, with a tour of combat duty as a navigator in the Eighth Air Force in England in 1944. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle and worked as an engineer at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, and later as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi until his retirement in 1984.
