John Levi Whittle, born in 1825 in Edmonson County, Kentucky, was a Neighbor to William Rankin Wright for many years prior to the war. William Rankin Wright was a confederate Soldier during the Civil War. Some of his neighbors were northern sympathizers so it was only a matter of time before hatreds would flare up and spread over the neighborhood When the fighting reached central Missouri, John Levi Whittle joined the Union Forces while Rankin joined the South....
During the Civil War when the the Rebel soldiers came to the home of Levi Whittle and took him into custody, his wife Nancy, and their 3 small children ran to the old cemetery for refuge. Family legend has been handed down for generations and the story told that "Grandma Nancy hid out in Rankin Wright Cemetery".
Thomas Owen Workman is buried in this cemetery with his wife Nancy Keeth Whittle along with their son James Melvin Workman and perhaps more of their children. Thomas Owen Workman's wife is the Nancy Whittle that is in this story. she married Thomas Owen Workman in 1865 after the death of her first husband John Levi Whittle.
