Ada Lee Powell
(February 5, 1923 - April 21, 2017)
Ada Lee (Powell) Evatt 94, of Ralls went to be with the Lord on April 21, 2017, at her residence in Ralls. Ada Lee was born on February 5, 1923, in Farmer Texas to Arthur and Ada (Wright) Powell. Ada Lee’s grandparents, Samuel and Mattie ( Thornton ) Wright , along with Mattie’s parents Samuel and Amanda Thornton were early pioneers to the South Plains who helped settle the Estacado and Farmer Communities in the 1880’s. Ada Lee is preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Evatt, two brothers, Jerrold and Louis Powell of Ralls and her parents. Ada Lee Graduated as valedictorian from Ralls High School in 1941 and was enrolled in Home Economics classes at Texas Technological College ( now Texas Tech ) until Pearl Harbor changed the world forever. When brothers Jerrold and Louis Powell, enlisted in the war effort, Ada left college to accept a job with the Farm Service Administration for Crosby County. Ada Lee and Elvin met on a blind date with Merrell and Irene Cox in 1944. Their courtship bloomed and she promised Elvin Evatt , that she would be waiting for him after his tour of duty with the U.S. Army, and the couple married at her mother’s home in Ralls on October 12, 1946. The two celebrated the 68th wedding anniversary in 2014 just prior to Elvin’s death in January of 2015. Devoted to her family, Ada Lee is remembered by family and friends alike for her delicious cooking. A member of the First Baptist Church of Ralls for over 80 years, Ada Lee loved teaching Sunday school and served on the food committee for over 20 years. It became a family joke when Elvin came in the kitchen to smell of a nice warm pie “ OH BOY” a pie…. Or did somebody die? She was proud of her family’s rich history and in 2011 published her story, “ Faith, Family, and Farming” in as Living History of the Lower Texas Panhandle: Cow Chips in the Cook Stove (Glair & Garvey, 2011, pp. 21-23). In 2002, Ada Lee was named Citizen Through the Years by the City of Ralls Chamber of Commerce, and both she and Elvin were named Mr. and Mrs. Cotton Boll by the City of Ralls.
