As a child, Pamela attended Curtis School near Pickerel Lake about 11 miles from Petoskey, Michigan. She is the half-sister of E. Louise Winter Russell.

Pamela lived with her father Joseph Winter (b. 1883) and her mother Edna Winter (Est. D.O.B. 1912-1919) in a house top of a high hill on Pickerel Lake Road. (Just up top the hill past 8786 Pickerel Lake Road). In the 1940s and 1950s a big hip roofed barn stood down from the house. Near the house was a very tall 1800s type of windmill sitting amongst other out buildings including a privy. (The privy was about 50 feet from the house.) The house itself had off white shingles and was trimmed in dark green. Down the hill from the house a mile or so on the four corners leading to Pickerel Lake, was Curtis School, a grocery store, and a softball field where local kids gathered on Sunday afternoons to play ball. The fourth corner was a field, we think owned by Nell and Cleyo Harris whose farm house was down the road toward Pickeral Lake.
