He was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Lorain, and was a lifelong Lorain area resident.
He attended Lorain High School, where he played football and basketball.
During the Great Depression, he and his father sold fruits and vegetables from a stall at the old Market House at Seventh Street and Broadway. In 1937, Catalano worked at the American Stove Works as a punch press operator and part-time at the Cue House on Broadway.
In 1940, he opened Angie's Billiards on Fifth Street, Lorain, which had four tables. As business thrived he moved in 1945 to space above the Palace Theater with eight tables, continuing until fire ravaged the building in 1952. He later operated a golf driving range and a skating rink, both on West Erie Avenue.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, a 59-year member of Elks Lodge 1301 and a member of Moose Lodge 552, both in Lorain. He enjoyed fishing and was an accomplished billiards player. He played softball in Lorain city leagues.
Survivors included his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth (nee Balko); one son and one daughter; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Josephine Catalano; brothers Frank, Bill and Jerome; and sisters Lillian, Rose and Christine.
