John William Stephens is the sixth child of ten born to David Phillips Stephens and Jane Evans. He grew up in Wales where the boys went to work in the coal mines at a very young age. Everyone in the family had to contribute as soon as they were able for the family to survive.

John married Elizabeth Williams about 1869 in Wales and they immigrated to the United States settling at first in Placerville, California where their first two sons were born: David and John Williams. By 1875 they were in Saint Johns, Idaho where most of John's siblings had settled and his parents also. Three more children were born there: Evan, Elizabeth J, and Daniel.

By 1881 the family had moved to Challis, Idaho where they stayed and raised their family. Two more children were born: Thomas and William.

John died at age 74 two days after his wife, Elizabeth.
