Born in Hickory Grove, he was the son of the late Marvin Talmadge and Edith Agnew Wharton.
Mr. Wharton graduated from Furman University in 1948 and was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church. He retired from Sears after 38 years in management.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Lynne W. and C. Grier Thompson of Greenville; grandchildren, Aaron Thompson and wife, Amanda, and Chandler Thompson; great grandson, Porter Whitfield Thompson. Mr. Wharton was predeceased by a son, Raymond T. Wharton; and sisters, Virginia Plyler, Edith Herndon, and Nancy Josey.
Burial: Graceland East Memorial Park Mausoleum.
