He was a well known artist and taught art at Pasadena Nazarene College. He was also an evangelical minister. He was known for painting the Yosemite area and even spoke a lot with the Indians. Author Sinclair Lewis knew him and loosely based his character Elmer Gantry after him. This was made into a movie starring Burt Lancaster.
