Mary's maiden name is "Johnson." Consistent with this family's naming pattern of perpetuating surnames, her son James Gifford's middle name is "Johnson." I have found no record of any of the descendants of Alex Gifford and Mary Johnson Gifford reflecting the surname of "Lauder" as a middle name. Recent research (2015) does appears to tie Mary Johnson Gifford to the "Lauder" family. In the early 19th century, widowed mothers could not be granted guardianship of their minor children; but rather were conferred upon men. Guardianship records available on Family Search, and an article in Volume 55, No. 2, 2014 of the Maryland Genealogical Society on the Gleanings from the Baltimore County Orphans' Court Proceedings, Part 7: 1808-1809 by Allender Sybert, reflect the following: On August 6, 1808, Alexander Gifford (Mary's husband) was appointed guardian for Mary Ann Lauder, the orphaned daughter of Alexander Lauder, deceased. Henry C. Peden, Jr.'s book, Presbyterian Records of Baltimore City, Maryland, 1765-1840, at page 163, lists Mary Lawder (sic) as the wife of Alexander Lawder. (The Lauder name was sometimes spelled/transcribed as "Lawder.") It is very probable that Mary Johnson was married to Alexander Lauder, and then married a second time to Alexander Gifford. Baltimore Tax Records Index at Family Search confirm that Alexander Lauder resided there from 1798 through 1803. Burial records from the Westminster Cemetery reflect the tombstones for Alexander Lauder who died January 11, 1803. Two of his daughters are buried next to him: Mary Lauder (1794-1796) and Ann Lauder (1793-1793). Research also confirms that Mary Johnson Gifford and husband Alexander Gifford, along with their son Robert Gifford and some grandchildren were also originally buried at Westminster Burial Ground, when it was originally called the Green Street Burial Ground. They were later removed to Greenmount Cemetery. The burial map from the Westminster Cemetery show the exact location of the Lauder plot, which reflects a large area of no burials, that I suggest is where Mary Johnson Gifford and family were originally interned. Note that the late Alexander Lauder's daughter Mary Ann Lauder, bears the given name of both her deceased sisters. Submitted by Janice.
