Daryl passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side on March 9, 2017. He was born in Long Beach California to Helen and Lyle Smith. As a child, he and his family moved from Long Beach to Bakersfield where his father was a barber. He attended Longfellow Elementary, Washington Jr. High, and graduated from East Bakersfield High. He served 4 years in the US Navy submarine service during the Korean War and became a naval photographer. During his tenure, he met and married his wife, Jackie. They moved back to Bakersfield and started a family. Daryl was a "born salesman". He owned and operated Blue Haven Pools for 37 years, building over 1800 swimming pools. Daryl spent his retirement years, traveling and photographing his adventures in Europe, and Asia, particularly Italy, his favorite country. Photography was his lifelong passion, and he never missed an opportunity to capture images of his family, friends, and animals.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie, son, Craig Smith (Julie), daughter, Robyn (aka Bobbie) Green (Clyde), sister Vinette Gannon (Larry), granddaughter, Steffanie Pemberton, great granddaughters, Vanessa, Addisyn, and Sloan Pemberton, cousin, Charlene Colocchio (Joe), and several nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send your donations to a favorite charity of your choosing. A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on March 16, 2017 at Christ the King Hall, 1800 Bedford Way.
