James C. “J.C.” Griffey, Jr., 92, of Gladstone, MO passed away peacefully on Monday, April 17, 2017 at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, MO. J.C. (as everyone called him) was born on December 9, 1924 to James C. and Hazel (Burke) Griffey, Sr. of Rural Ray County, MO. J.C. is survived by his wife of 73 years, Norma Jean (Smart) Griffey of Kansas City, MO; son, David Griffey and his wife, Shelley of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Cynthia Fay and her husband, David of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Pamela Petitt and her husband, Ron of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren, Michelle Smith, Jason Carter, Joshua Carter, Justin Griffey and Jonathan Griffey; and 6 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Elijah, Addison, Mason, Gavin and Ashton. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald Griffey; and his granddaughter, Jennifer Anne Carter. After graduating from Excelsior Springs High School in 1943, J.C. joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He worked at General Motors in Fairfax, MO as a supervisor until he retired in 1976. He loved to travel and he and his wife did extensively after their retirement. J.C. was of the Presbyterian faith. He lived in the Kansas City area most of his life. Memorial graveside services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Sunny Slope Cemetery in Richmond, MO, where military honors will be provided by the Ray County Veterans. Visitation will be Friday, April 21, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.
