David W. F. McNeil
Nov. 5, 1951 - Nov. 1, 2016

David W. F. McNeil, a devoted husband, father, church member, activist, and friend, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 1, 2017 while working at his office.

David was born in Boston, Mass., to Susan Young McNeil and Willard Francis McNeil.

He grew up in nearby Needham, and graduated from Brooks School in North Andover, Mass.

He went to Amherst College, where he played varsity football and rowed on the crew team, graduating in 1973.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School in 1980. He joined the Oregon State Bar in 1981, and the Missouri State Bar in 2007.

David married his sweetheart, Linda Fisk McNeil, in 1981. They were happily married for 35 years. Twin sons Matthew and Jacob joined them in 1990.

After college, David worked at the Principia School in St. Louis, Mo., and at Parrott Creek Ranch in Oregon City.

He served as a clerk for Circuit Court Judge R. William Riggs, and later as an attorney for the firm Gevurtz & Menashe. He had a private law practice from 1982-2010 in Portland and St. Louis, and volunteered his services at St. Andrews Legal Clinic. David also worked for Pacific Crest Outward Bound School from '87-'89 and the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission from '90-'91. For the last four years he was the Executive Director of Canterbury Crest, Inc., in Portland.

David was a lifelong athlete who loved bicycling, hiking, running, skiing, speed skating and inline skating. In 1974, he rode his bicycle 2,600 miles on a solo trip through the Western US. He also cycled from Portland to Washington, D.C. in 1987 with a longtime friend. He ran the Portland Marathon in 1979. David joined the Mazamas in 1978. He was active in their rock, mountain and ice climbing programs, as a climb leader and advanced climbing instructor. In 2000, David set a personal goal of running 2,000 miles; he ran the final leg Dec. 31, 2000. He raced with short-track ice and inline skate teams in St. Louis and Portland (Team Oaks). David was a Red Sox, Blazers and Ducks fan.

As a lifelong student of Christian Science, David served as a lay reader in church services and on his church executive board.

A leading passion for David was his work to abolish the death penalty. He served on the executive boards of Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.

He was a deeply spiritual man, gentle, honest and generous. He dearly loved his wife and sons, and all of his family and friends.

David is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Matthew and Jacob McNeil; his brother, Bruce (Susan) McNeil; sister, Karen McNeil Wesson; stepbrothers and sisters, Bruce (Donna) Bair Mundy, Sybil Mundy, Brook (MaryAnn) Newcomb, Debbie (Bill) Nightingale, Betsy (Henry) Beth; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. His father and stepmother Doris; and his mother and stepfather Winthrop Newcomb, predeceased him.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 22, 2017, at New Hope Community Church, 11731 S.E. Stevens Rd., Happy Valley, OR 97086.
