She was born in Belmont, VA on February 18, 1922, and was a daughter of the late Russell and Mary (Zigler) Mason.
Marie was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. She earned her bachelor's degree from Bridgewater College and her teaching certificate in Special Education from James Madison University. She taught four years in the Waynesboro Virginia and about ten years in the Gaithersburg and Talbot County Maryland School Systems.
She was united in marriage on June 5, 1945 to Wendell Flory, who preceded her in death on December 14, 2003. Wendell and Marie served as Church of the Brethren missionaries in China from 1946-49, and in India from 1952-57; and served Church of the Brethren pastorates in Charlottesville and Waynesboro in Virginia, and in Gaithersburg and Easton in Maryland, before retiring to Bridgewater in 1985.
She is survived by three children, Ted Flory and wife Mary Beth, Phil Flory and wife Ellie, Janet Flaten and husband Dale, and a son-in-law, Mark Steury, all of Bridgewater; a twin sister, Miriam Holl, a brother, Ivan Mason and wife Peggy, a sister-in-law, Kitty Mason, all of Bridgewater; and a sister-in-law, Mary Mason, of North Manchester, Indiana. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Flory-Steury, a daughter-in-law, Dawn Flory, a sister, Ina Shank, and two brothers, Floyd Mason and Olin Mason.
The family would like to thank the staff of Bridgewater Home for their gentle and loving care for Marie.
A memorial service will be held at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jeffery Carr officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bridgewater College or Church of the Brethren, Elgin, Illinois.
