William is a son of William Ericksen Bitter and Myrtle Irene West - the fourth of their seven children. The family lived in Twin Falls, Idaho in 1935 and in Rexburg in 1940.

William enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1942 during World War II. He was stationed in Washington at the time of his death. He was killed in an air crash over Puget Sound near Everett, Washington. His body sank in very deep water and was not recovered. A memorial service was held in Rexburg, Idaho.
