Funeral Rites Here Today For May Birch
Mrs. May Birch, former prominent Orland business woman, and prominent WCTU leader of the valley, died at Enloe Hospital Friday morning following an extended illness. Mrs. Birch fell several months ago and broke her hip and had been at the hospital for many weeks.
Mrs. Birch, who was a registered pharmacist, was prominently identified with the development of Orland before her retirement from active business a number of years ago. With her husband, the late Westley [sic] Birch, she operated the Birch Pharmacy, which later became the Orland Rexall Store, owned by R. W. Owen. During her active civic life and after retirement from active business, Mrs. Birch was a leader in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, being head of the local Union for many years, and later president of the Glenn-Tehama Union up to the time of her illness. She was also active in the State Federation, in which she held a number of offices.
May Evelyn Birch was a native daughter of Glenn county. She was born at Chrome, formerly known as Millsap, in the foothill country west of Orland, on June 23, 1867, the daughter of pioneers of that section.
For the past three years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Doris Wheeler, at Corning. Mrs. Birch is survived by her daughter; one son, Tennant Birch, of Orland; a brother, Lester Cushman of Willows, and one sister, Mrs. Helen Luce of Elk Creek.
Funeral services are being held this afternoon at two at the Sweet Chapel in Orland, with burial at the Graves Cemetery.

Mae Birch Dies at Chico Hospital
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sweet funeral chapel for Mrs. Mae Birch, who died Friday morning at Enloe Hospital. Burial took place at the Graves cemetery where her husband, Wesley Birch, was buried several years ago.
Born west of Orland at Millsaps, on June 23, 1867, Mrs. Birch made her home in Glenn county almost all of her life, operating a drug store here with her husband for about 40 years. They retired from business early in 1934 when they sold their store to Bob Owen.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Birch made her home at Corning for some years with her daughter, Doris Wheeler, later returning to Orland to live with her son C. T. Birch and his family. She has been a patient at Enloe hospital for several months since she fell and broke her hip.
In addition to her two children, she is survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A brother, Lester Cushman of Willows, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Luce of Elk Creek, also survive. - Transcribed by E.
