Melvin L. Long, 88, of Norfolk, Nebraska, passed away on April 4, 2017, at Heritage of Bel Air.
He was born in Norfolk on January 8, 1929, the son of Lloyd and Ethel (Chesser) Long.
Melvin was raised in Norfolk and attended Norfolk the Public Schools.
He entered the US Army on September 6, 1946. He served in the Occupation Army of Japan and earned his honorable discharge on December 23, 1947.
On July 23, 1948, Melvin married Helen French in Madison, NE.
They made their home in Stanton before moving to Norfolk where they raised their family.
Melvin was employed by the City of Norfolk in the Street Department. Later, he worked for Madison County Roads Department. He retired in 1991.
He was an active member the First Baptist Church in Norfolk for over 50 years. He served as a deacon and the trustee. Melvin also was the grounds keeper for 20 years retiring in 2010.
Melvin enjoyed hunting in his younger years and fishing throughout his life.
He is survived by: his children, Kathryn Mason, David and Brenda Long, and Steven Long; eight grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife of 65 years, Helen; son-in-law, Jon; four brothers; and one sister.
Funeral Service on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Norfolk, with Military rites.
