Iowa MASON CITY — Melvin Raymond Abrams, 79, of Mason City, died Thursday (Oct. 21, 2004) at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 301 South Main, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird W. Korth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake. Memorials may be directed to the Melvin R. Abrams Memorial Fund. Melvin Raymond Abrams was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Crookston, Minn., the son of Otto R. and Mattie (Bruns) Abrams. Melvin attended country school in rural Crookston, Minn., and when he was 10, moved to Erskine, Minn., where he lived on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Navy Oct. 8, 1942 serving on the USS North Carolina in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was honorably discharged Oct. 8, 1945. Melvin was united in marriage to Ruth (Lindseth) Abrams on Oct. 23, 1945, in Erskine, Minn. Melvin and Ruth moved to Thornton where he farmed until 1962 and their four children were raised. After farming Melvin formed his own construction business, Melvin Abrams Construction. Melvin and Ruth moved to Mason City in 1984. Melvin retired in 1999, but still kept active by volunteering his time in many capacities. Melvin loved fishing, gardening, traveling, and watching Western movies. He loved and was very proud of the achievements of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Abrams, of Mason City; children: Bruce Abrams, of Cedar Rapids, Gary Abrams and his wife, Laura, of Bloomington, Minn., Diane Schinagel, of Clear Lake, and Gloria Abrams of Marshalltown; grandchildren: Nichole and Beau Schinagel, Jeremy Abrams and his wife, Lofan, and Josh Abrams and his wife, Julianna; great grandchildren: Jahnya Schinagel, Tirrell Schinagel-Hopkins, Cael Abrams, and Sedona Forsberg; brother Francis Abrams, of Yakima, Wash.; sisters: Arlene Noyes of Erskine, Minn., and Margret Pendzich of Wisconsin; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by parents; sisters: Jewell Hoskins, and Dorothy McWilliams; brothers: Ivan, Alfred, Spencely, and Donald Abrams.
