Actor. Born George Rutland Barrington-Fleet in Penge, Bromley, Kent, England, he was a popular stage and film actor. A member of the famous D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, he was considered one of it's greatest members and one of the most famous and popular performers of the Victorian era. Barrington began performing the work of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur S. Sullivan in 1877, when he joined the company. Some of his notable roles were as Corcoran in "HMS Pinafore", Dr. Daly in "The Sorcerer", "Sergeant in "The Pirates of Penzance", Grosvenor in "Patience", Mountararat in "Iolanthe", Hildebrand in "Princess Ida", Sir Despard in "Ruddigore", Pooh-Bah in "The Mikado", Giuseppe in "The Gondoliers", Ludwig in "The Grand Duke", and as King Paramount in "Utopia, Ltd." Barrington left the company in 1896, to try his luck at theatre management, and also to appear in a few musicals and operettas in the West End of London. In 1908, Barrington returned to the opera house and appeared as The Judge in "Trial By Jury", as Wilfred Shadbolt in "The Yeoman Of The Guard", and as Don Alhambra in "The Gondoliers", before leaving in 1909. His two autobiographies, "Rutland Barrington-By Himself", was published in 1908, and "More Rutland Barrington", was published in 1911. Barrington's later life was plagued by financial difficulties, and after his death he was buried in an unmarked grave. Barrington's grave was finally marked in 1997 when an appeal organized by the Gilbert & Sullivan Society resulted in the dedication of a suitable granite marker. His other roles include the films, "San Toy" (1900), "The Great Adventure" (1915), "Still Waters Run Deep" (1916), and "The Girl Who Loves A Soldier" (1916).
