Henry was born July 6, 1933 in Rutherford County, NC a son of the late Archie Coleman Hughes and Essie Mae Murray Hughes. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette Jordan and two brothers, Fred C. Hughes and Hal E. Hughes.
He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Libby Whisnant Hughes; his sons, Michael L. Hughes and wife Carol, Alan M. Hughes and wife Evelyn. Grandchildren: Sara Hughes Balzer and husband David, Ann Garret Hughes Stilley and husband Trey, Samuel A. Hughes and Alison M. Hughes.
After graduating from North Carolina State in 1955 with a degree in Textiles he then served 2 years in the US Army. In 1957 he began his textile career in Danville, Virginia. In 1964 Henry moved his family to Tarboro to open a manufacturing facility. His successful career in textiles spanned over 50 years.
Henry gave back to his community by serving for years in various civic roles and on numerous corporate boards. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing.
The family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro, on Thursday April 20, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Tarboro on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 2:00pm.
