Preceded in death by parents; wife, Edna Matthews; son, Michael Matthews; grandson, Derick Muckle; sisters, Ruby Miles, Mildred Matthews; several aunts and uncles; father-in-law, Johnny Jack, Sr. Survivors: daughters, Anita Matthews, Jennifer Matthews, Nakia Matthews Mitchell; son, Melvin Matthews, Jr.; sister, Elizabeth Cross; mother-in-law, Rachael Jack; brothers -in-law, Johnny Jack, Jr., Kenneth Jack; twenty grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; devoted companion of many years, Lorene Young, and family.

Family will receive friends, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Jarnigan's Chapel; funeral service, 6:30 p.m., Rev. Dr. Elston McLain, Presiding, Rev. Cedric Jackson, Eulogist. Interment 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Mount Olive Cemetery, Maryville Pike. Arrangements by Jarnigan & Son Mortuary.
