Sgt. Lucas was a member of Company I, 8th Indiana Infantry and served during the civil war. He enlisted in Wabash County, Indiana on August 25th, 1861. Upon enlistment Lucas stood 5'11", had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. He was later discharged on August 27th, 1863 due to a disability due to a gunshot to the knee he suffered at the battle of Port Gibson, Mississippi. His right leg was later amputated. After the war Lucas became a member of the William B. Reyburn Post of the G.A.R.

After the war William and his family moved to the Oklahoma Territory. His wife died in Oklahoma in 1903 and William returned to Indiana where he died in 1910.
