Aaron, a Confederate soldier, was the son of David and Anne Elizabeth (neé Winston) Stanton. He was born in Traveler's Rest, MS (located in Natchez).
Aaron was known to family and friends as "Tip", - a name he got from his father, who was called "Tip" after he fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe.
He married the granddaughter of Governor Brandon, Elizabeth Elmina "Ella" Brandon. The two moved into her family home, Brandon Hall, where he continued his trade as a farmer.
The couple had four children: Charlotte Brandon Stanton, Anna Wilson Stanton, Agnes Stanton, and David Brandon Stanton.
Aaron's grandson, and namesake, Aaron Stanton Merrill, went on to become an Admiral in the Navy. Admiral Merrill inherited the nickname, "Tip", from his grandfather.
