As his daddy did, he went by the name pronounced "Chivis". His obituary in the Sumter Daily Item of 1/30/84 says that he died on a Saturday.

It is said that he was born in Ridgeway. But, Cheves' parents moved from Sumter County to Ridgeway shortly after they married (married 1 Aug. 1900). As the first-born of four children, it is likely that Cheves was born in a hospital...possibly back in Sumter. The Wray family moved to Sumter in 1916, buying the Witherspoon home at 316 West Calhoun St. And Cheves graduated with the Sumter High School class of 1920...https://www.edmundshigh.com/alumni.html?x=info&c=20. He then attended N. C. State. From a background in refrigeration, he founded a company, Calray Sales & Service Co. At age 60, he sold the company and bought 450 acres of land between Sumter and Bishopville.

He married Helen Stewart (born in Aberdeen, Scotland) at an unknown date. On 29 Oct. 1924, he married Helen Gould Biggs, and they had a daughter, Nancy Patricia Wray who married a Glenn Dahlem of Wisconsin and was living in Denver Colorado at the time of his death. My records indicate that they had a son, Cheves Stewart Wray born April 1929 but not with his mom & dad in 1930 census (so, presumed died in 1929). Another daughter (of which Helen?) was married to Chevis Johnston of Ladson, S. C. (which is located between Summerville & Goose Creek).

Memorial services were held at Hebron Presbyterian Church in Oswego, S. C. His body was donated to MUSC in Charleston, S. C.
