John Howard Sterne M.D.

Evansville, Ind.

John Howard Sterne M.D., 99, of Evansville, passed away April 13, 2017, at Hamilton Pointe Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born August 19, 1917, to the late Charles Howard and Pauline (Fink) Sterne.

He attended Assumption Grade School and Central High School, graduating in 1935. He earned his BS Degree in 1940 and his M.D. in 1942 from Northwestern University. John served one year of internship at Akron City Hospital, followed by six months in the Medical Department of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. His residency in Orthopedic Surgery began in January 1944, but was interrupted by two years in the U.S. Army with 16 months in the Medical Corp. in India during WWII. After his Honorable discharge from the U.S. Army as a Captain, he returned to the Indiana University Medical Center at Riley Hospital, where he completed his specialized surgical training. Dr. Sterne returned to Evansville in 1949, and began his medical practice where he was a staff doctor for Deaconess, St. Mary's and Welborn Hospital and on the visiting staff of the Henderson, Tell City, Jasper and Huntingburg Hospitals. In Evansville, he and Dr. Henry Leibundguth started the Tri-State Orthopedic Surgeons, which has grown to 30 surgeons. John's uncle, Adam Fink, was the first laboratory technician at Deaconess Hospital. He took over raising his young nephew after John's father died in 1919 in the flu epidemic. He was very instrumental in his interest in medicine.

John married the former Mary Bennett in 1942 and they enjoyed 27 years of marriage until her passing in 1969. They raised three children together. In 1977, he and Sara "Sally" Stanley were married. From this union, he gained a loving wife and four stepchildren. John and Sally loved their beach condo in Pompano Beach, Fla., and spent winters there for over 25 years since his retirement in 1988.

Dr. Sterne was a member of the Indiana Medical Society, American Medical Society, Indiana State Orthopedic Society, past board member of the American Academic Orthopedic Surgeons, past president of St. Mary's Hospital, and past President of Vanderburgh County Medical Society. He was also a member of St. Benedict's Cathedral, Evansville Country Club, Poets, and the Kennel Club.

Dr. Sterne is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sally (Stanley) Sterne, of Evansville; children, John H. "Jack" Sterne II of Los Angeles, Calif., Edward Sterne (Carolyn) of Indianapolis, John Stanley of Evansville, Boo Stewart (John) of Naples, Fla., Bruce Stanley of Raleigh, N.C., and George Stanley (Teresa) of Evansville; grandchildren, Courtney Wilson, Betsy Cohen, Sara Spuhler, Jake Stewart, Carrie Etherton, Johnny Stanley, Cullen Stanley, Walter Stanley, and Loretta Sexton; eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Sterne; daughter, Mary (Reynolds) Esparza; and his granddaughter, Mary Mosby.

Dr. Sterne was known and respected by his family, friends, patients, peers, and staff as a kind, and gentle man who cared deeply about the well-being of the patients entrusted to him for healthcare and to the happiness and welfare of everyone he knew. He had good words for all people and his legacy will be that he was a wonderful person and excellent physician.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2017, at the funeral home, and will continue at St. Benedict's Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN 47714, where A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Evansville, with the Retired Veterans Club will conduct Military Honors.
