John was born in Las Vegas, NV on September 18, 1946. His parents (who were originally from NY,) brought him back there to live when he was 6 weeks old.

He lived in Merrick, NY until 1964, then they moved to Nesconset, LI. He graduated from Smithtown Central HS in June 1964.

He was an Electrician Apprentice with IBEW Local Union #25 on LI.

He enlisted in the US Navy and in Feb. 1965, attended basic training at the Great Lakes Training Center.

He served 4 years in the Navy. He did 2 tours in Vietnam on the YW 128. Then he served on the USS Wilkinson.

He was honorably discharged from Service on Oct. 1, 1969 & transferred to the US Naval Reserve.

He returned home to Nesconset and resumed his Apprenticeship with the IBEW.

Shortly thereafter, he met Susan M. Jaegge of St. James, LI through a mutual friend. They fell in love and married on Sept. 6, 1970. They remained married for 46 years.

They had 2 daughters...Jennifer, born on 2/17/72 and LeighAnn, born on 5/19/75.

John is also survived by his sister, Sandra Vivian (Vetter) Benz, and his half-sister, Barbara Lee (Sharp) Laird.

John & Susan were full-time RVers for 12 years...moving all over the Country following his work.

in 2008, they both retired and moved to beautiful Destin, FL. They continued their RV travels.

John was a member of the American Legion Post 296 in Destin, where he held many offices. He was also a member of the Mobile Riverine Force and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

John died of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on April 8, 2017, which was caused by exposure to Agent Orange while in Vietnam. He was 70 years old.

He is also survived by his Grandchildren; Bethany, Amanda, Zachary Madden, and his Great-Grandchildren Gabriel, Mia & Alistor.

John was given a full Military Funeral, escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders, on April 28, 2017.

His ashes are interred in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL. Susan will join him there.
