David John Stowell passed away of kidney failure and multiple myeloma on April 13, 2017 in Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho. He was born on November 27, 1941 in Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho to Grant LeRoy Stowell, and Wanda Jensen Stowell. He was the sixth of seven children and the second of three boys in the family. His sisters and their spouses are Ruth Stowell Chandler (Sam), Helen Stowell Wahlquist (Fred), Dorothy Stowell Ashcraft (Grant) and Rae Ann Stowell Owens (Lynn). His brothers are Lynn Grant Stowell (Bonnie), and Dennis Dee Stowell (Annette).
He attended school in Pocatello, Idaho beginning with Emerson Elementary School, then Irving Junior High School, and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1959. He attended Idaho State College after high school, and then accepted a mission call to the Toronto Canada mission. He served two years in Canada, and had the privilege of having President Thomas S. Monson as one of his mission presidents. During his mission, one of his favorite assignments was the mission newspaper editor, which allowed him to use his talents in this area. He lived in the mission home with President Monson and his family for 10 months during this assignment.
After his mission, he returned home and attended Idaho State University. He met Judith Elin Stark while attending Idaho State University, although they had been neighbors for most of their lives. They dated, were engaged on Christmas Day, 1964, and were married on July 1, 1965 in the Idaho Falls Temple, in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho. They lived in Pocatello for a couple of years and then moved to Blackfoot, Idaho. They had four children, Stephen David Stowell (Kimberly Hensley), Bradley Grant Stowell (Aeschylus Austria), Gregory Stark Stowell (Tauna Watkins) and Christina Kaye Stowell DesFosses (Danny Ryan DesFosses). He spent quality time with his children in their adult years, giving service to them when needed. There were family trips and fun experiences with them that enriched his life.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for his lifetime, and served in many positions. He had been a Ward Clerk, a Membership Clerk, and Executive Secretary, High Priest’s Group Leadership, and a Varsity Coach. He always enjoyed the record keeping portion of church service. He was a Home Teacher for many families who appreciated his ability to serve in times of need.
He worked at his career at the Naval Reactor Facility for a variety of contractors, the first was Westinghouse, and ended with Bechtel. He had a variety of jobs but eventually found a job that was a joy in his life as a material control coordinator for the naval supplies that were needed by the nuclear vessels that the facilities at the plant used. It connected him to the other naval facilities in the country, and he had the privilege of visiting one of those on a trip to California, where he was hosted at the Alameda Naval Station in Oakland California.
In 1996 he moved with his family back to Pocatello to be closer to family members, and he retired in 2005. He had enjoyed his job with the Naval Reactor Facility and would miss this work in his life.
The enjoyment of retirement included becoming a grandfather, and he enjoyed the company of his grandchildren, Makynna Kelsey DesFosses, Rachel Goldie Stowell, Shaelie Christina DesFosses, Tavian Ryan DesFosses, and Brie Isabella DesFosses. He gave of his time freely to spent time with them and with their parents. He had the number of grandchildren doubled when Courtnee Marie Barbieri, Taylor Nichole Barbieri, Emmali Rose Barbieri, Shelby Lyn Barbieri, and Noah James Barbieri came into the family through marriage. He enjoyed these young people very much. He had a very special pet in the last years of his life and would spend quality time with his cat Foster.
He is survived by his wife, Judith, his children and their spouses, five grandchildren and his five step grandchildren, his four sisters and their surviving spouses and his two brothers and their spouses.
His final arrangements are under the direction Downard Funeral Home. The family will greet well-wishers on April 20, 2017, from6-8 pm. Interment will be at the Soda Springs Cemetery on April 21, 2017 at 11:00 am.
