George Murray Grimes, DVM, Born in Drummonds, TN, Dr. Grimes graduated high school in Memphis, attended the A&M College of Texas, and graduated a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years before retiring as a Colonel to attend graduate school at A&M and Tulane. After receiving a Masters degree in Biomedical Communications, he was recruited by the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois where, at the dawn of the computer revolution, he became a pioneer in the development of computer-based education for veterinary students. After seven years at the U of I, he returned to the family farm to set up a small animal practice. Concurrently, he honed his skills as a writer of short stories and poems reflecting his life experiences. He was married for 59 years to the late Lillian (nee Griffin) Grimes and leaves four children and four grandchildren. He was a long-time member of Second Baptist Church and, during his long life of service to others, he found time to be a Christian veterinary missionary in Ouagadougou, Upper Volta (Africa) and Costa Rica (Central America). Family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. with the services following at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church (built by his grandfather and re-built by his father) on Saturday, April 22, he will be laid to rest in Poplar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, 228 Quito-Drummonds Road, TN.
