*Died and is buried at the "Red Hill" Plantation, Charlotte Co., VA, in an unmarked grave. Son of John Henry and Elvira Bruce McClelland (both buried at this cem.).

Served briefly as Capt. of the Company I, 56th Va Inf Regt and he is listed on the roster. Same company and Company I was from Charlotte County. He is also listed with the 56 in the Court House Records VA Volunteers; resigned because of tuberculosis.

He married on 9 Feb 1858 in Charlotte Co., VA, Mary E. Gaines b. 22 Jan 1835 in Charlotte Co., VA; they had the following children: Mary Gaines b. 29 May 1859; Thomas Stanhope b. 4 May 1863; and Robert Gaines b. 4 Dec 1866.
