On Feb. 28, 1926 in Huntingdon, Tennessee, Willie (Bill) McHaney and Dora Thorpe-McHaney gave birth to their only child and named her Mary Amanda Nellie Mae McHaney after her grandmother and aunties but affectionately known as Nellie Mae. She received Christ at an early age in Huntington, Tennessee.
Nellie relocated to Champaign and on Nov. 24, 1946, she married her late husband L.T. Tinsley in Champaign. Through their union four children were born.
Nellie Mae served on the Advisory Committee for the Champaign-Urbana Boys Club. She worked at 7UP Bottling Company and she served as an election judge for many years.
In her 72 years of faithfully attending Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, she served in the Mission Circle, was a member of the choir and regularly attended Sunday School.
Nellie Mae had a gift for hospitality and loved hosting and entertaining family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and baking.
Nellie Mae had sense of fashion and was known for wearing her extravagant hats on Sunday morning.
Mother Tinsley leaves to cherish her precious memories her children, Lindell (Maureen) Tinsley, Sandra (Willie) Graham and Aaron (Madlayn) Tinsley; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, L.T. Tinsley; her son, Byron Eric Tinsley; her grandson, Ethan LaMar Graham and a great-grandson, Jermel Montreale Hedrick.
