Helen was born on May 28, 1926 in rural Pesotum, one of nine children of Louis and Matilda (Gilles) Hettinger. She married Fabian J. Schaefer on March 29, 1948 at St. Mary's Church. Fabian died on Nov. 6, 2008.
She is survived by her three sons, Daniel (Lynn), John (Shelly) and David; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda; her parents; her brothers, Father Paul Hettinger and Monsignor Clarence Hettinger; her sisters, Sister Victoria Hettinger, SSSF, Sister Marilyn Hettinger, OSB, Margaret Hettinger, Jeanne Miller, Agatha Koeberlein and Eileen Painter.
Helen graduated from Villa Grove High School in 1944. She was a farm wife and worked in a variety of jobs during her life. She particularly enjoyed being a proofreader for the News-Gazette and a day care provider for KinderCare.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Champaign County Farm Bureau and the Kirby Hospital Auxiliary.
She volunteered her time by helping prepare and serve meals at St. Jude Catholic Worker House in Champaign and helping with the Kirby Hospital blood drives.
Helen was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed watching Illini football and basketball games. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's school activities and sporting events, rooting for the Villa Grove Blue Devils, Unity Rockets and Monticello Sages.
She loved to bake and cook and was always spoiling her family with homemade cinnamon rolls, angel food cakes, cookies and noodles.
