William P. Edwards is the son of Wm. Presley Edwards, who shares this headstone, and Ellen Jeffries Edwards. According to family records, William P. Edwards was born 5 months after the death of his father. There are discrepancies regarding the year of birth and death for William and his father as well as other members of the family. The other side of this headstone says that Presley Edwards was born in 1811 and died in 1861. If this were true he could not have been the father of his last four children. According to the Civil War Union widows pension records submitted by Ellen Edwards, Presley died in 1866. Her obituary, as well as those of other family members and a newspaper article regarding the 90th birthday of William's twin sisters, Sarah and Emma, says that Presley died in 1866 of wounds suffered in the Civil War.
The 1870 census for McLeansboro, Hamilton Co., IL, lists Wm P, 3 yrs, living with his mother, Ellinder Edwards, 35 yrs, and 4 sisters, Mary E. (Lizzie, 8 yrs), Sarah (6 yrs), Malissa (Emma, 6 yrs), and Laura L (Luella, 5 yrs) and Thos. Musgrovas (a foster child, 11 yrs).
