According to a Battle Creek, Michigan newspaper article Miss Matilda Bretz died in Ontario, Canada on February 25 1948 at the age of 92.

Publication: Battle Creek Enquirer Location: Battle Creek, Michigan Issue Date: Wednesday, April 7, 1948 Page 22: Two Here Among Heirs to Large Ontario Estate Mrs. Allene Long of 33 Lourin court and her brother, Walter Bretz of 515 Southwest Capital avenue, have been informed that they are among heirs to the sizable estate left by their aunt. Miss Matilda Bretz, who died at Bruce Mines, Ont, on February 25 at the age of 92.

A law firm at Bruce Mines solicited aid of local police yesterday in locating the local heirs. Police found that both had been previously informed -of their heirship by a cousin in Canada and had retained counsel to represent their interests. There are seven nieces and nephews living in Canada also listed among heirs. Miss Bretz, who was the sister of Enoch Bretz who operated a tailor shop in Southwest Capital avenue near Michigan avenue years ago. lived alone all her life.

She was the telephone operator at Bruce Mines and often boasted that she would continue to work until she was 100, when she would retire, the nephew here recalled today. "She worked right up until the time of her sudden death," Mr. Bretz said, "and was Canada's oldest telephone employee in years of continuous service." The local heirs said that they knew Miss Bretz owned her own home and other property and bonds and had been informed by their Canadian kin that the estate is a large one.
