Donald C. Brater, 80, of Marco Island, Fla., died Friday, March 19, 1999, in Florida.
Mr. Brater and his wife, Lois, lived in Oak Ridge for 42 years.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 4, 1918, the son of Carl F. and Frances Gomien Brater, longtime residents of Cincinnati. He attended the University of Cincinnati and Purdue University, majoring in chemical engineering.
Mr. Brater participated in World War II as a special agent in the Counter-Intelligence Corps, assigned to the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge. When completing this tour of duty, he and his family remained in Oak Ridge, where he worked as a development and chemical engineer with Union Carbide Nuclear Division.
He and his wife developed a greenhouse business that they operated from Oak Ridge and Knoxville.
In 1988, Mr. Brater retired and the couple moved to Marco Island, where he enjoyed fishing for snook, gardening and playing bridge.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his son, Craig, of Indianapolis, Ind.; his daughter, Judy, of Knoxville; his daughter-in-law, Stephanie; his granddaughter, Aimee, a student at Loyola University; his son-in-law, Peter, of Knoxville; his sister, Betty Kleeman, of Bellevue, Wash.; and his brother-in-law, Ben Kleeman.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at the United Church of Marco Island.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Mothers Fund of the United Church of Marco Island, 320 N. Barfield, Marco Island, FL 34145.
