Irish Musician and Composer. He was an influential figure in early 19th-century opera in London, England. A child prodigy, he was trained by his musical father and Italian composer Tommaso Giordani, who resided in Ireland at that time. At the age of 9, he gave his first concert in Dublin, Ireland. As a young man, he was proficient on the flute, violin, viola, cello, piano, clarinet, harp, and trumpet, as well as being an accomplished singer. In 1791, he performed the role of 'Saraskier' in Stephen Storace's opera "The Siege of Belgrade" at the English Opera House in London, and he decided to stay there for the remainder of his life. In September 1815, he performed for the first time at the Drury Lane Theatre as 'Don Carlos' in Thomas Linley's "The Duenna" and remained its leading tenor for the next 20 years. He was also involved in productions at Lyceum and Haymarket theatres and at Covent Garden. He was also in much demand as a singing teacher, numbering among his pupils later celebrities including Elizabeth Rainforth, John Sims Reeves, John Templeton, and Margaretta Graddon. A prolific composer, he wrote over 50 operas and other orchestral arrangements during his career. He died at the age of 65.
