John “Jay” F. Spillane, 80, of Sagamore Beach, died Friday, April 7, 2017 at JML Care Center in Falmouth surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Donna Mae (Fournier) Spillane.
Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late Evelyn and Clement Spillane Sr. Raised in N. Easton, he moved to Wareham in 1948 until 1956 when he moved to Ashland. He relocated with his family to Sagamore Beach in 1975. Along with his family he owned and operated Buzzards Bay News for 10 years, then worked for the Cape Cod Times until his retirement in 2005.
Mr. Spillane served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. He was a scratch golfer who also enjoyed fishing and woodworking. A student athlete in Wareham, he was inducted into the Wareham Hall of Fame in 2016.
Survivors include his children Linda Dunlevy and her husband Paul of Maryland, Patricia Marks and her husband Andrew of Mashpee, Karen Rowley of Plymouth and Kevin Spillane of Bourne; his brothers, Clement Spillane Jr. of Wareham, Edward Spillane Sr. of New Jersey and Robert Spillane of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Candice “Trick Magoo”, Daniel James, Patrick, Madison Robin, Madison Elizabeth, Grace and his great grandson, Jace Andrew. He was predeceased by his brothers, Cornelius and Maurice Spillane.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham . A funeral service will follow. Interment immediately following at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham MA.
