Steven LeRoy Williams was born April 30, 1950 in Maddock to Clifford and Evelyn Bratvold Williams. He attended school in Maddock and graduated from BCATS in 1969. He enlisted in the US Army on Feb. 19, 1970. He was a radar crewman at a forward support base in Vietnam from July of 1970 until his honorable discharge. He was awarded several commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on September 24, 1971. After his discharge, he attended college at Wahpeton. He worked in several construction, welding and maintenance jobs in Fargo, Bismarck and Maddock until taking a job in the maintenance department of the Good Samaritan Hospital in Rugby. While employed there, he also was a volunteer ambulance driver. He married Kari Haugen in 1986. They later moved to Minot where he managed a 35-unit apartment building. She died in 1998.
He was active in the Minot Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Vietnam Veterans, the VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include two sisters, Janice (Gene) Haugen of Fargo and Gweneth Mills of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four brothers, Gerald (Deb) Williams of Bottineau, Kenneth (Renae) Williams of Minot, Les (Teri) Williams of Burke, Va. and Dan (Linda) Williams of Fargo; and his fiancee, Carol Arneson of Minot.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
