Nelda Janelle Farmer Smith, 75, of Abilene, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

Born on June 25, 1941 at Sadler Clinic-Hospital in Merkel, TX she was the daughter of the late Harold and Flora Mae (Jeffery) Farmer. She grew up in Abilene, TX, graduating from Abilene High School in 1959.

She met the love of her life Wayne L. Smith through a mutual friend at the Church she grew up in, Calvary Baptist Church on Victoria St., Abilene, TX. They were the last couple to be married at Calvary on Victoria St. before the congregation moved to a newer and larger building at N. 12th and Minter Lane. They were married on December 24, 1959.

Nelda was a stay at home Mom until 1984 when she went to work in the Classified Ads Department at Abilene Reporter-News. She transferred to the Accounting Dept. in 1987. She worked for the newspaper for a total of 7 years. She then went to work at Abilene Regional Mental Health-Mental Retardation Center (now Betty Hardwick Center) in 1989, retiring in 1999 to take care of her parents through the CIBA program for the last 3 years of their lives. Nelda also sold Avon for 25 years.

Nelda served as the PTA president at Anson-Jones Elementary from 1981-1982. She enjoyed sewing, especially for her children and family, scrapbooking and doing genealogy (tracing her family back through the past). She was briefly a member of a Beta Sigma Phi chapter. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Wayne; 3 daughters, Trudi Mask and husband Terry, Alicyn Tidwell and Stacy Jones; 13 grandchildren , Clay Smith and wife Tiffany, R.C. Smith and wife Shayla, Shawn Strevel, Shauna McArthur and husband Clint, Joshua Jones and girlfriend Caitlyn, Kenzie Rees, Tanner Rees, Tristan Mask and fiancé' Xena, Ecko Tidwell, Blaze Mask, Ariana Tidwell, Austin Tidwell, and Ashley Whitfield; 7 great-grandchildren - Sterling, Kaytlyn, Zach, Candice, Shambrey, Caselyn, & Karter; an aunt, several cousins, and numerous friends.

Nelda was preceded in death by her parents in 2002, two infant brothers in 1944 and 1956, infant twin sisters in 1947 and son, Tommy Smith in 1986.

Pall bearers are Clay, R.C., Shawn, Joshua, Tanner, Tristan, Terry and Clint. Honorary pallbearers are Blaze, Austin, Sterling, Zach, and Karter.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, April 13, at Starbuck Funeral Home, 201 Edwards St, Merkel, TX. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 14, at Beltway Park Church, 4009 Beltway South in Abilene, with Kenny Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Merkel, alongside her parents and infant siblings.

Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or meals on wheels.
