Major League Baseball Player. Born Selva Lewis Burdette Jr., he played in the major leagues from 1950 to 1967. He started his career with the New York Yankees and was traded to the Milwaukee Braves during the 1951 season. He also spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Angels. A two-time All-Star, his lifetime record was 203 wins and 144 losses, with an earned run average of 3.66. His average of 1.84 walks per nine innings pitched places him behind only Robin Roberts (1.73), Carl Hubbell (1.82) and Juan Marichal (1.82) among pitchers with at least 3,000 innings since 1920. His most memorable achievement came in the 1957 World Series, when he was named the Most Valuable Player with 3 wins, no losses and a 0.67 ERA. He pitched three complete games against the Yankees and capped his dominating performance with a shutout in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium. He was the winning pitcher in 1959 when the Pittsburgh Pirates' Harvey Haddix pitched a perfect game against the Braves for 12 innings, only to lose in the 13th. In 1960 Burdette pitched a no-hitter against the Phillies, facing the minimum 27 batters and scoring the game's only run. After retiring as a player he was the Braves pitching coach in 1972 and 1973.
