Michael Gene Cody, 76, of Kokomo, entered the arms of the Lord while surrounded by his family on April 10, 2017 at 5:40 p.m. He was born on September 20, 1940 in Richmond, IN. He was the son of Keith and Genevieve Cody.

On September 28, 1958, Michael married the love of his life, Marjorie “Marge” Newman. During their 58 years of marriage, they built a beautiful family, bringing 4 children into the world, and created countless memories that will continue to live on through the lives of those who knew and loved him.

Michael had a real passion for serving his community. This translated into 37 years of working for the Kokomo Police Department. He proudly and heroically served the city of Kokomo, climbing the ranks from Patrolman to Captain. His children and grandchildren recall countless stories of him working in the Narcotics and Detective Division while he pursued his lifelong dream of becoming Captain of the Uniform Patrol. In October of 1991, Michael’s dream came true and he was named Captain of the Uniform Patrol.

Michael enjoyed life and had a true appreciation for all it had to offer. He enjoyed wood working, playing pool, shooting archery, horse shoes and playing Super Mario Brothers with his grandchildren. He loved to joke and share stories from his life. Being an avid story teller, he was able to command anyone’s attention. His smile lit up the lives of those he touched, and laughter followed him wherever he went.

Michael was a real life hero. Someone everyone could look up to. His accomplishments were great and the records he set were many. However, his greatest accomplishment in life was his family. Michael was the proud father of Kathy (Rod) Richardson, Michael J. (Victoria) Cody, Lori (David) Osborne and Leslie Grell. He was the beloved grandfather (Gago) of James (Andrea) Elkins, Lindsay (Cory) Stafford, Gabrielle Cody, Carliegh Cody, Kylie (Ryan) Riecken, Sara (Lee) Mitchell, Lindsey Pounds, David (Jennifer) Osborne Jr., James (Caitlyn) Osborne, Michael Osborne, Cody Grell, Megan Grell, Mackenzie Grell, Nathan Grell, Ashlie (Bruce) Dittfield, and Amy (Cory) Rife. Michael was also the great-grandfather (Gago) to 21 great-grandchildren.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jerry Cody, granddaughter, LeAnn Reynolds and great-granddaughter, Annyah Reynolds.

Funeral services for Michael will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Reverend David Osborne (son-in-law to Michael) officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10-1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
