Jesse, Melton, son of Edmond P. and Lucy Tatum Melton, was born Dec 13, 1875 in Christian County, MO, near Selmore, and passed away at his home in Ozark, Oct 23, 1951, following a year's illness. He had lived his entire life in the Ozark vicinity. At the age of 14, he was converted and joined the Prospect Baptist Church, later transferring his membership to the Ozark Baptist church, where he was a faithful worker until his death. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a daughter, Mrs. Earmel Gross; three brothers and one sister. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rilla Melton; two sons, Herschel Melton of Illinois and Don Melton of California; a daughter, Mrs. Vesta Gold of Billings, MO; a stepson, Clarence Gentry of Idaho; a step-daughter, Mrs. Fern Whicomb of Oklahoma; three brothers, Bedford and Robert Melton of California and Clifford Melton of Ozark; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Melton of Highlandville, Mrs. Sophronia Plank and Mrs. Pollard of Ozark; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon in the Chaffin Funeral Home chapel by Rev. Carl Bush. Interment was made in the Highlandville cemetery under direction of Chaffin.
