Private first class Jeffery S. Patterson served with 2nd Platoon, B Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. On 03 Jun 1968 he, and 14 other members of Recon Team "Cayenne", established a night position on a ridge line approximately 9 kilometers west-northwest of Hiep Duc village. At 2245 the night position was attacked from two directions by about 40 enemy troops employing small arms, grenades, and satchel charges. In a brief and bloody exchange 7 Marines were killed and the other eight team members wounded; one of the wounded, Navy Corpsman Earl R. Lerch, died shortly after being evacuated.
Pfc Patterson was survived by his father, Thomas J. Patterson; mother Mrs. Isabel Miller; and a sister, Mrs. Kathy Johnson.
